As the market declines further, the gap between sales, and the "overpriced" inventory increases. The Real Estate service providers are paying the ultimate price and dropping out like flies.
In the near future the industry will have to re-boot. What will it look like in the aftermath, will there be large real estate companies and offices with 50-150 agents, or more like a few surviving individual independent brokers, and will there still be print real estate publications standing or just internet marketing?
Most would tell you that there are not enough buyers in the market, which is one response. Yes, the job/businesses/income loses are staggering, and credit worthy buyers are greatly reduced (unless the lending industry wipes the past two years credit history off for those especially effected in the real estate, building, developing, lending industry and supporting businesses, which has significantly reduced the buyer pool). But, there are still many buyers waiting on the sidelines to be enticed to purchase, but the majority of the inventory is priced above the current buyers value.
The reason assets are not SOLD in this market... A lack of a proper pricing strategy, and promotion to qualified and motivated buyers!

My advice to every seller in the market, if you do not need to sell, then take your home off the market, which will reduce the supply, and for those that seriously need to sell, you need to bite-the-bullet and get your pricing strategy aligned with the buyers' value.
How do you know if your overpriced, if your asset has not sold within 30 days or less then it's overpriced! The fact of the market, the buyers set the value not the seller, like it or not it's the buyers turn now, especially after many years in a over-inflated sellers market!
